Mr. Justice (Retd.) M. Tabassum Aftab Alvi
Mr. Justice M. Tabassum Aftab Alvi was born on February 20th, 1958 at village Sanghar Rawali, of District Bagh. He did his Matriculation from Government High School Mohri Furman Shah in 1975. He joined Hussain Shaheed Govt. Degree College Rawalakot and passed B.A. examination in 1980, from Punjab University, Lahore, in the year, 1979. He acquired Degree of LL.B. from University of Karachi, in the year 1983. He did his Master of Law (LL.M.) from the University of Karachi, in 1988. After appearing in final examination of Bachelor of Law, he joined office of a famous jurist and senior Advocate of Supreme Court of Pakistan practicing at Karachi, Mr. S.S. Sheikh, in 1983. He was admitted on the role of Sindh Bar Council, on May 22nd 1984. After enrolment, he joined the office of Mr. Usman Ghani Rashed, (former Advocate General) Sindh in December, 1984. He was enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court of Sindh, on 19th June, 1986.
He shifted to Muzaffarabad Azad Jammu & Kashmir in 1988. He was enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court of Azad Jammu & Kashmir on April 11th, 1988. He was enrolled as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, on September 1st, 1988. He was also enrolled as an Advocate of the Lahore High Court, on the role of Punjab Bar Council, Lahore, on January 28th, 2003. He joined Kashmir Law College, Muzaffarabad as Honorary part time Professor on January 1st, 1989 and taught in the aforesaid College for about 14 years. He had also taught in the University Law College Muzaffarabad, from the years 2002 to 2004.
He remained Finance Secretary of Azad Jammu & Kashmir Supreme Court Bar Association, for several times. He was also elected for three terms as Secretary General of Azad Jammu & Kashmir Supreme Court Bar Association, since February 16th, 2002 to May 5th, 2006. He remained member of Karachi Bar Association and Sindh Bar Council. He is lifetime member of Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench, and Punjab Bar Council. He is also lifetime member of Azad Jammu & Kashmir Bar Council and member of Central Bar Association, Muzaffarabad.
He practiced for about 23 years in the Azad Jammu & Kashmir High Court and Supreme Court, mostly on constitutional side and in service matters besides conducting numerous cases in criminal and civil matters. Approximately 400 cases conducted by him in the Azad Jammu & Kashmir Service Tribunal, High Court, Shariat Court and Supreme Court have been reported in different leading journals of Pakistan. He conducted large number of civil, criminal, service and constitutional cases before subordinate Courts of Karachi, Sindh High Court at Karachi and Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench. On a number of occasions, he was invited by the High Court and the Supreme Court of Azad Jammu & Kashmir to assist the said Courts as amicus curiae.
He was elevated as Chief Justice of the High Court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on 3rd April, 2017 and Chief Justice of the Shariat Court of Azad Jammu & Kashmir on 5th April 2017 and took oath on 5th April, 2017 respectively.
